Tips and Advice for doing Special/Sound Effects

  • Sfx for theatre shows should be done on MiniDisc. It's still the most reliable and easiest to use format.
  • Make sure all your cues are on the disc in order, if you use the same cue more than once record it several times, it tends to avoid confusion.
  • Name the tracks on the disc and the disc itself. Also clearly label the disc on the outside and don't lose it. Make a backup copy and keep it somewhere safe.
  • If your MD player has a 'play one track then pause at the start of the next' feature use it, it's invaluable. It's often called auto-cue or auto-ready. On Tascam decks it's called Auto-Ready and with most models you need the remote control (On which you press the button marked A-Space repeatedly) or a PS/2 keyboard (F9) to activate it.
  • It's arguable whether you should put quiet sound effects on the disc quietly or normalised. I prefer normalised to make the most of the signal-to-noise ratio and so the fader level represents the FOH volume but it means you're using the low resolution part of the fader near the bottom.
  • I find preparing sfx easiest on a computer. I would reccomend trying to edit and collate them all on computer, burning them to CD then copying the CD digitally to MiniDisc. That way you have two backup copies to fall back on. However, be prepared to edit the show disc when you come to the final tech and dress rehersals. Cues often change at the last moment.
