MUGSS Positions: Stage Manager

DSM is responsible to the Stage Manager, and for the Assistant stage manager. With these people (usually two ASMs) the DSM liases with crew and cast through rehearsals and the show itself.

During rehearsal, DSM annotates all actors' movements, cues and prompts as required. They are a liason between the rehearsal and other production departments. Get a copy of the lib, hole punch it on the right and put it in a folder. Make notes on it in different colours, stickers, whatever it takes to make it so you can look at a page and see what you have to know for that particular scene.

During performance, DSM runs the show from the side of the stage to cue lighting and sound operators. The DSM calls the cast to the stage (according to....the prompt book. Which they're carefully prepared beforehand during rehearsals in readable handwriting.)

Deputy Stage Manager should:

  • Mark out dimensions of set on rehearsal floor when required for blocking etc.
  • Create the prompt book, a full copy of the lib annotated with notes about the blocking of the cast, props required, cues for lighting, sounds, props and cast.
  • Call the cast in good time during the show.
  • Maintain communication with the crew through the Assistant Stage Manager, lighting desk operator etc.
  • Cue the show.

The DSM should attend all rehearsals where possible.

Stage Managers Do Make Coffee: A Handbook for Stage Managers - Written by Carissa Dollar, with a LOT of experience, it's probably the best resource on the web. Some key points are reproduced above but this should really be read through!
It covers information for stage managers, deputies and assistants.
