MUGSS Positions: Costume Manager

The Costume Manager (or Wardrobe Manager) takes the designs by the Costume Designer (surprised?!) and organises the making of them. It involves buying the materials, measuring members of the cast, begging and borrowing equipment and arguing with some crew members that sewing machines are power tools, really.

Costume making sessions are organised by the Costume Manager, usually in the Reynold building, and an important part of the job is advertising this and encouraging cast (and crew) to come along and help out.

You also have to make sure the costumes get to the correct place (probably dressing rooms!) during the get in, and that they're taken back to the right place after the shows. Any hired costumes should be returned on time. Also check with the individual place as to whether you're meant to clean them first - many warn you not to

Things to consider

The budget. It will have been set - but sometimes, depending on the eyar, type of production etc it will include makeup, wigs etc and some years it may not. It's worth checking
  • Does the cast have anything you can borrow? Black tshirts, they can provide. If last year's show everyone bought black pumps, remind them of that!
  • Does the director want anything hiring? If so, go to costume shops and find out what they have. Remember that you'll need the costumes not only for the week in Manchester but the two tours as well - is there any kind of deal they can do, or a discount if you also buy a lot of props there? There's a list of costume hire shops on the wiki.
  • Make a card for each actor with their name, sex, character, measurements and what costumes they need.
