Lighting Equipment
Lanterns
There is a bewildering array of jargon used when talking about what a lay person would refer to as a 'light'. Instead terms such as instruments, fixtures, lanterns, luminaires are largely used interchangeably. To further complicate things, terminology may vary between countries and nicknames or trade names used. A bulb is usually referred to as a lamp or in some cases a bubble.
Primarily there are two types of instruments used in conventional theatrical lighting – those that have controls to adjust the beam and those that don't – referred to here as spotlights and floodlights. Instruments that must be adjusted by hand are may be referred to as 'generics', while those that include motors for remote adjustment are known as 'intelligents'.
