This guide is intended to give an introduction to basic practices and equipment encountered in stage lighting. If you've either never touched a lantern before or want to further your basic knowledge, you should find something useful here. After reading it you should have an idea how the main types of equipment fit together, together with a number of useful practical tips that can save time and reduce stress! Also covered is the typical sequence of steps performed in bringing the director's vision to the stage.
Like many specialist industries, and in common with most aspects of theatre, lighting has its own range of exotic jargon which can be daunting to newcomers. Hopefully though, the essentials should be covered here and a vocabulary will be further developed through experience. Importantly, you should never be afraid to ask; most things are best learned from practise as situations arise. There is however, no substitute for practical experience and you shouldn't read this or similar documents and expect to be a fully qualified lighting designer!
Most importantly it this guide should hopefully help to open up a range of very enjoyable and rewarding opportunities. There are few things that are as satisfying as seeing an audience transfixed by a performance, and knowing that all your hard work and preparation is playing a role in enhancing their enjoyment with lighting.
