Patter Song

Patter Song

A song which is generally very fast, very funny, and closer to being spoken than sung. A good example is the famous Major General's song from the Pirates of Penzance.

Generally performed by a "patter baritone" - in most G+S shows he's the comic relief, with excellent comedy acting skills (but not necessarily the best singing voice).

A recording is available of the Major General's song (3:33s - 2.6Mb) as performed by Peter England in Pirates 2002. The reprise was performed a little faster (58 seconds).
