Gel

Gel

Thin sheets of transparent plastic used to change the colour of lights. Gel comes in a very wide variety of colours.

The lighting designer will plan what colour each lantern used for a show must have. During rigging, each lantern will be coloured by cutting a piece of Gel to fit into a special metal frame attched to the lantern.

Each colour of gel has a name and a number – and lighting plans will refer to these in order to ensure that the correct colours are used.
