Dimmers

Dimmers

The electrical equipment which changes the brightness of the theatre's lanterns. Dimmers are controlled via the lighting desk.

Old equipment used very large variable resistors to do this – meaning that dimmers were effectively large electrical heaters and hence unplesant to work around. Newer kit uses pulse width modulation – producing a distinctive buzzing noise when the lights are in use, but much less heat and wasted energy.
