These are some tips for someone who is doing the job of
Chief LX. For what the Chief LX does see our position description.
- Although easier said than done, not getting flustered/hassled/rushed seems to help for the plot. Take time and get it sorted there and then, be assertive with the director/etc. if necessary. Feeling rushed and deciding to do it later actually makes it harder. Needless to say try and learn the desk beforehand.
- Keep track of where stuff is going when "helpers" move it for the get out. Having areas/boxes reserved for LX I found helps stuff from getting lost.
- Check all kit as it comes in. Count everything even down to safety changes and fix shortages there and then.
- putting the main areas of the stage general washes on submasters is really useful. In the case of a screw up on a cue at least you can provide enough light to make the actors visible, even if they don't look artistic. I've found having multiple on-stage/front of stage/ cold/warm combinations of subs useful.
- Check and double check every single connector type in the venue/hire kit. e.g. if required is the demux output male/female? standard 8pin (which configuration?) din/25pin? +/-10V? etc. Lanterns on 16/15/5amp plugs? etc.
