Social events. You can just never have enough of them.... The MUGSS diary is
full of socials of exciting variety:
- Pubmeets: Quite a lot of the societies time is spent in assorted pubs and clubs. After most rehearsals there will be a drinking meet somewhere nearby, which may just end up at one of Manchester's wonderful clubs if you're really lucky. (And it'll end up at Jabez if you're not)
- Parties: With the spotlight-hogging tendancies of a good proportion of our membership, fancy dress parties are fairly regular events. The themes are varied, and each year brings a host of old favourites and new ideas. Past themes have included "Secret Fantasies", "Super Heroes", "Rocky Horror", "Things beginning with P" and "Halloween". Some more serious drinking events exist as well, such as the annual cocktail parties.
- Balls: We usually have two balls per year, one just before Christmas and one after the summer exams. They are thinly disguised excuses to dress up, dance, perform cabaret and eat far too much food.
- Away-Days: The show plays at to theatres outside Manchester for one performance each. Last year the trips were to Harlech and
Buxton. Keswick and Kirkby Lonsdale are also popular destinations. The usual format for these days is to get up too early, get on a coach to the venue, rig the show, rehearse a bit, have a huge meal in some local pub, perform the show and then have a party.
- Other stuff: All sorts of other social events have been tried in the past, hiking weekends, theatre and cinema trips and the nearly infamous MUGSS Summer Holidays. All will return, given sufficient support.
