The CommitteeChair: Jen Petrie
Jen joined MUGSS in September 2003 and is very part to be a part of the MUGSS family. In her 6 and a bit years she has been in 8 shows, which includes being a principal twice (Ruddigore 2005, Sorcerer 2009), choreographer 3 times (Mikado 2007, Iolanthe 2008, Sorcerer 2009), director twice (Bugsy Malone 2007, Iolanthe 2008) and a great array of other posts in-between. She has also been on committee twice, once as an ordinary member back in 2004/5 and now as chair. During her time in MUGSS Jen has completed a BA in Archaeology, an MA in Neolithic Archaeology and is currently in her final year of a PhD. Treasurers: Charlotte Unsworth and Hannah Smith
Hannah only joined MUGSS in September 2008 as a fresher, but during this year it has started to be a big part of her life... it's a good job that she loves it! So far I have only been in The Sorcerer, however she is really looking forwards to being in The Pirates of Penzance next year. This is her debut on the committee so she hopes to do a good job and be allowed back in the future. Aside from MUGSS, she is currently doing a BSocSci in Social Anthropology, which she enjoys very much. She is sure that the best thing about MUGSS is the amazing friends she has made. Charlotte joined MUGSS in 2002, looking for a group to sing in that wasn't too serious! Pirates will be her tenth show, and MUGSS is one of the major reasons she's still in Manchester! She's held almost every role, in the cast (chorus), crew (production manager Ruddigore; director Bugsy Malone; costume manager Iolanthe), and in organisational roles (Chair Rock Trial, Utopia and Mikado; treasurer; publicity; sponsorship). Charlotte started MUGSS in her first year of a BA in English and American Literature. Not knowing what precisely to do with a BA in English, she decided to spend a few more years as a student, doing an MA in Creative Writing, an MPHil in English Studies and is looking forward to doing a Secondary PGCE in 2009-10, proving that you can do a lot in MUGSS and still get good degrees! Secretaries: Ben Woolner and Lia Keevil
Ben is a second year mathematician who enjoys comic light opera and ironing his bed linen, so it comes as no surprise that he has volunteered his time to take minutes, book rooms, and do all the other stuff that nobody would choose to do without financial incentive. Usually well mannered and good humoured, Ben's temper is easily flared by encounters with Student Activity authorities and the UMSU room bookings bureaucrats. Aside from MUGSS, Ben is passionate about Manchester City Football Club, foreign travel, cheese and Ribena. Lia has always loved musicals and enjoys being on stage, so when she started university in 2007 she looked for a musical drama society to join and found MUGSS. She has never looked back loving being part of MUGSS. So far she has been in Bugsy Malone, Iolanthe and The Sorcerer and cant wait to be in Pirates of Penzance. This is the second year she has been on the committee. Last year she started as an ordinary member and then when the post of secretary opened she decided to challenge herself and was appointed secretary. When not attending MUGSS she studies drugs as part of her pharmacology degree. Social Secretaries: Ed Owens and Simon Andrews
The social secretary's job is to organise two socials a week; on thursday after the rehersal and at the weekend on saturday night. They are incharge of the organisation of the 2 annual balls and various parties traditionally held throughout the year; such as the cocktail party, tarts party, wine evening and the week of socials during show week. They need to keep an ear open for any new ideas for bars/pubs and types of party they can include through the year and need to be approachable and encorporate ideas from the members into the weeks events.
On a week to week basis they are responsible for getting to know each member of the society and encouraging each member to come to the socials and get to know one another. The Social sec also spends a lot of time convincing people to hold events in their houses (wheedling, persuasion and grovelling techniques come in handy). They create the environment for the members to enjoy and socialise in. In fact they're just fabulous really! Ordinary Members: Bev Bright, Fi Greenslade and Hannah Moss
Bev joined MUGSS in 2007 when she was dragged along by Fiona and she hasn't looked back since! She has so far pranced around on stage in Bugsy Malone, Iolanthe and The Sorcerer and looks forward to more prancing around in this year's show of Pirates of Penzance. This being her first year on the committee as an ordinary member, her general role (along with Fiona and Hannah Moss) is to be the friendly face of the committee and you will surely be introduced to her in Fresher's Week! She will also be co-producing the 24 hour show with Charlotte this year, so feed her caffeine and all will be fine! She has just finished a degree in Biomedical Science and is taking a year off in Manchester before starting a research PhD. Generally known as 'the bouncy blonde one', you will surely get to know her (if you already don't!) once you join MUGSS. Fiona officially joined MUGSS in September 2006, but was too much of a shy little fresher to go on her own, so didn?t actually join until September 2007. Immediately she wished she hadn?t left it so long as she realised what a welcoming, wonderful and ever so slightly weird bunch MUGSS are. When she?s not getting her words wrong in the chorus or tripping over her own feet, Fiona can most likely be found pulling her hair out in John Rylands attempting to get to grips with Cognitive Neuroscience and Psychology...fun times. Hannah. Since arriving on stage at the age of 6 in the musical version of The Owl and the Pussy cat and prrrroudly taking front stage as the cat herself, Hannah has been a passionate performer. Undeterred by any obstacles to get to centre stage (except of course a top b) Hannah has taken on numerous roles such as a monkey, a fish, a witch, Romeo (from Romeo and Juliette The Musical) and later in life a few leads in a few serious plays. When Hannah stumbled upon MUGSS she decided that that was it for her University career: she wanted to play an airhead in a Gilbert and Sullivan production. When she is not hamming it up pretending to be able to sing opera, you can find her at her laptop writing essays for her English Degree. Oh joy oh joy. Production Manager: Tom Lyall
Tom joined MUGSS in September 2008 and after spending too much time in the pub with the crew, now returns as Production Manager for Pirates. When not in the arch or the pub, he can be found attempting to get a Masters in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
