Principal Audition Details

Dialogue

You will be asked to speak one of the pieces of dialogue depending on your character.

Bugsy: character libretto (If you're going for a male role, read Bugsy; for a female role, read Blousy. Cross-casting is an option).

Iolanthe:

Music

Bugsy

The singing parts we will be auditioning for in Bugsy are as follows:

Women:

  • Blousey Brown
  • Tallulah
  • 3 Girl Singers
  • Lena Marrelli
  • Fizzy (may be cast male or female)

Men:

  • Bugsy Malone
  • Cagey Joe
  • Fat Sam's gang (harmony singing an advantage)

There are also a number of single solo lines which will be divided up between the best of the rest.

We are doing the stage version of the film, so sadly no song for Dandy Dan. In terms of voice types for each role, all the songs are in really easy keys, and should be singable regardless of whether you are a soprano, alto, tenor or bass.

We will also be auditioning for non-singing parts of which there are many.

Audition Pieces

These parts are optional, and we would prefer that you sang music that you picked and prepared yourself.

Ideally people should pick something out to flatter their voice, that they feel comfortable singing. Anything will do, but please bear in mind we are trying to cast Bugsy with quite brassy show voices, whereas with Iolanthe operatic voices may be picked. We will consider more showy voices for Iolanthe, but will probably not cast operatic voices in Bugsy.

If you don't have anything suitable, don't panic. We are offering to teach four potential pieces, all of which are downloadable here in pdf sheet music and midi format.

For Bugsy the pieces are:

For Iolanthe the pieces depend on whether you are a low voice or a high voice:

  • Iolanthe High Female (Sopranos): None shall part us MIDI and PDF
  • Iolanthe High Male (Tenors): Spurn not the nobly born MIDI and PDF
  • Iolanthe low Female (Altos): I'm feeling fine MIDI and PDF
  • Iolanthe low Male (Basses): Down and Out MIDI and PDF

If there is demand for the idea, we'll be teaching these at the last rehearsal before the auditions, but again may I reiterate that you'd be much better off picking something out yourself.

We may get you to sing the pieces through a few times experimenting with different ways of delivering the songs, and you may be asked if you would consider taking a part in the other show to the one for which you have auditioned, or whether you'd consider taking a non-singing role (we'll be asking everyone this so don't be put out by the question!).

We have audition tips and auditions process information on the website. You are strongly advised to read them.
