Principal Auditions for The Pirates of Penzance

First of all, MUGSS does not audition for chorus members - if you want to be on stage in our show, and are willing to come to rehearsals and learn the words and music, you can be in the chorus. However, if you want to be a principal, and sing and speak by yourself, you need to audition.

The principal auditions for The Pirates of Penzance are open to all members of MUGSS. Don't worry if it's your first show - last year more than half of the principals were new to MUGSS and for some it was their first principal role in anything ever!

Auditioning is a non-scary process in front of a small group of friendly people: the Directors, Musical Director and a member of the Committee.

We actively encourage people to audition, irrespective of experience. We would be happy to hear every single member of the Society audition for us. Even if you've never auditioned for a show before do give it a go - you might be surprised!

Once the panel has seen all auditionees, they will meet to discuss casting. Unless you specify in advance that there are any roles you would not accept, you will be considered for all roles in the show you auditioned for.

When

Auditions for The Pirates of Penzance will be held on the 5th and 8th of November 2009.

Where

The venues for the auditions are yet to be decided - come along to rehearsals for more information.

How

The audition will be, on average, ten minutes long. They will be booked in blocks of five people in each hour. Audition times can be booked at rehearsals or through emailing auditions@mugss.org.

What

Naturally there will be elements of acting and singing.

For the acting there are prescribed pieces of libretto which ideally should be learned.

You can do these elements in any order you choose.

You may use libretto texts and sheet music in the audition, but you are advised to prepare so that you do not need them...

Audition Tips

Audition Tips and Guidelines are available.

For now, simple advice would be to prepare yourself properly: LEARN the pieces by heart and practice them out loud with a (really patient!) friend over and over again.
