Pirates: Director's Vision
The director, Alasdair King, had this to say about his plans for Pirates:
The Pirates of Penzance is a wonderful show. From the opening number, when the Pirates roar onto the stage, to the vivacious women's numbers, to the famous comic Police, the music is stirring and exciting. The story grabs hold of the audience from the very beginning with the most sympathetic and likeable characters in the canon and a plot that's full of surprises. Gilbert and Sullivan even provide some real and beautiful love songs charmingly set off by the hi-octane silliness.
But if it's so great, what is a director to do with it? Well, I hope to give it the treatment it deserves and get across the enormous fun of the show. My aim is simply for the audience (and cast) to leave with smiles on their faces. They should have rejoiced in the bold exuberance of of the Pirates, laughed at the terrified but noble Policemen, adored the smart and beautiful women, admired the handsome men, felt lumps in their throats at the ardent young lovers... with so much to do, I had better get back to my dog-eared script. Wish me luck, or better yet, come along and join us onstage. Shiver me timbers!
