The Players' Theatre |

The Players' TheatreWe reported a while ago that the Players' had run out of cash and closed down. Since then, we've been informed of three different attempts to re-float it in different guises. The venue itself has been re-branded as "The Villiers Theatre", which remains a private club. We are told that the bar has re-opened, but that the proposed redevelopment of the theatre has not gone ahead because of lack of cash. The company are now performing at "The Venue" (Leicester Place, Leicester Square) and are in the process of purchasing a site for a new theatre of their own. We'll report any more info as we get it. Not actually an in-joke, more of a favourite haunt this one – however it does get mentioned a lot by the Soaks and unless you've spent a lot of time around Charing Cross in London you've probably never heard of it. The Players' Theatre describes itself as: "The world-famous Players' Theatre offers a memorable night out at London's only genuine Victorian Music Hall. This charming and intimate venue also offers a fine restaurant and two bars open till late. The inspiration for the TV series 'The Good Old Days', for sixty-five years we have offered British theatre at its very best." (Its website can be found here at www.playerstheatre.co.uk) It's also one of the favourite meeting places for MUGSS Old Soaks in London – due both to it being a private club (and hence having long opening hours) and the fact that it's cheap and rarely too busy to get a seat. Next time you're near Charing Cross station, why not go and have a look? |
