Ida, Ida You're my Princess
(to the tune of The Battle Hymn of the New Republic)
Performed by Robin Adams, at Kirkby in 2004.
In a courtyard, in a castle, stood a king named Hildebrand
With his son he'd named Hilarion, for he thought it sounded grand.
They awaited Princess Ida, for Hilarion had planned
On this day to take her hand.
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
May I this day take your hand?
Enter Gama, King of Hung'ry, and his sons who number three.
Says Hildebrand in fury, "To the dungeon now go ye!
A wedding 'tween the princess and Hilarion I must see
Before I'll set the old man free."
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
May I set the old man free?
From Blanche we learn philosophy, of apes does Psyche sing,
Now it's Florian and Melissa who are going to have a fling...
The luncheon bell! It almost to an end their courtship brings,
But they kiss just on the ring.
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
May I kiss just on the ring?
Enter all the female students to a clapping, skipping beat,
For lunchtime in their day is always looked on as a treat.
Says Ida to Hilarion, "Come sit here beside my feet,
And I'll feed you some luncheon meat."
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
May I feed you some luncheon meat?
When Ida finds they're men, into the river she does fall.
Hilarion dives and saves her, but it calms her not at all.
Then it's "Soldiers, ma'am! For Hildebrand!" Melissa she does call,
"They have breached our virgin walls!"
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
May I breach your virgin wall?
Then it's Death to the Invader and I Built Upon a Rock.
Ida asks her girls to fight for her, but all their knees do knock.
Enter Gama's sons for battle - first their armour they must doff,
And they toss their helmets off.
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
May I toss my helmet off?
Hilarion, Cyril, Florian limb from limb the brothers rend.
Hilarion comes to Ida, here's what Ida tells him then...
Well, we changed the ending slightly, but what Gilbert did intend
Was: "I love you" in the end.
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
Ida, Ida, you're my princess,
May I love you in the end?
