Swiss Tony

Swiss Tony

Ok, I know – this has nothing to do with the Alternative Programme – but where else was I going to put stuff culled from the Mailing Lists? It's not Cabaret, it's not an In Joke.... So no complaints.

Anyway.....

In the dark days between Colwyn and Kirkby during Pirates 2002, there was a thread on the MUGSS mailing list about whether we were an operatic society with socials, or a social society with operas. Somehow, this conversation turned to what "Swiss Tony" from the Fast Show would think of MUGSS. Robin Adams explains Tony's viewpoint:

You know, joining MUGSS is a lot like making love to a beautiful woman.

You do it for the first time in Freshers' Week, just for a laugh, or because you've drunk too much wine. But, after you've been doing it every week for a while, you find it's harder work than you thought.

You have to make the right noises and get the bits of your body in the right place and moving with the right rhythm, while two strange-faced men shout confusing instructions at you from the side.

It often leaves you exhausted, but you'll never give it up.

You boast about it to your friends. You want them to know what you've been doing; you want them to come and watch you do it on a stage in front of hundreds of people every night for a week.

And, if you do it well enough, then maybe... just maybe... there will be more people next year.
